About MeMy name is Barbara Shy. I am a highly qualified teacher with a Master's degree in Special Education. I have been teaching for 15 years. I have taught in a variety of capacities in both elementary and middle schools.
My current position for the past 8 years is working in a separate setting class teaching the extended content standards. I feel privileged to be a special education teacher. To work with such creative, unique, students and to witness the amazing work they are capable of. |
My Philosophy |
Learning takes place every day. Whether it is trying out the recipe for a special dish or the words and music to a new song. Learning is life-long. An ancient Chinese proverb articulates, :Give a man a fish and you feed him a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Educating children is more than dispersing information, giving facts and worksheets. As educators we are challenged with the responsibility to spark curiosity and engage the learner. We must empower them to take ownership in their education and the process by making what they learn relevant. We must encourage students to look past the period at the end of the sentence to ask the probing questions and assist them as they search for answers. Exposing them to the world gives them the insight to possibilities instead of limits. I endeavor to empower and assist students, on all levels, toward learning ownership; I want to "teach them to fish."
